Who doesn’t love an independent bakery, built under a railway arch with its own onsite stone mill? I think you’ll be hard-pressed to find someone answering “no” to this. There are two areas of E5 Bakehouse – the Millhouse Shop serving lunch and selling local goods and the Café for all your breakfast, brunching and lunching needs!
There’s not much seating in the Café, but a friend and I managed to grab the end of a communal table for brunch one Sunday, which was surprising for the major footfall we witnessed. I ordered the mushrooms with caramelised leeks on toast with an extra soft boiled egg (£8.00) from the classic chalkboard menu, while my friend went for the two free range soft boiled eggs on toast with chilli butter and extra charcuterie (£7.50). The sourdough toast was fresh and perfect with an above par portion of big juicy mushrooms! The only disappointment was my soft boiled egg, which was more hard boiled…so close!
I’m a huge fan of supporting the independent bakery, cafe or restaurant and if I was local to Hackney, I would definitely be brunching at this place more regularly. Locals should definitely make time to visit and eat all the home baked organic goodies…I might have to make the journey back from SW for some sausage rolls or the Sunday sourdough pizzas which looked and smelled great!
