If I was to rate this place exclusively on the food, it would have scored 4.8 out of 5, but unfortunately, a few other factors meant this just wasn’t possible.

Located next to Honky Tonk on Clapham Common South Side, Brickwood really stands out with its pastel mint green shop front and at brunch time on a Saturday, it was packed! There were bums on seats at every table, on every bar stool and yard bench (out back) with a consistent queue out the door. Fortunately, a lot of people had decided to grab takeaway sourdough toasties and pastries, so the wait for a table was only around ten minutes.

I loved the busy vibe and we had a great table at the back next to the window looking onto the back yard. However, when were first sat down, I wasn’t sure whether the glasses and bottle of tap water were fresh as there was still an empty can of drink on our table that hadn’t been cleared away. Nevertheless, I excitedly ordered a flat white and the corn fritters with roasted vegetables, halloumi, beetroot crème fraiche and poached egg.

It arrived beautifully presented, so much so that it took me a minute to realise that the halloumi was missing! As a halloumi lover and the fact the dish was £9, I asked a waitress and she quickly checked the menu and apologised. They didn’t offer to refresh my dish, but brought out a single piece of grilled halloumi on a side plate. The corn fritters were crispy, the roasted veg were sweet and the egg was perfectly poached- it was SUCH a shame they had forgotten the halloumi!! Maybe it was a one off, but it really wasn’t acceptable to miss a main ingredient.

Last things to be aware of… you pay at the counter as you leave with your table number (which we found out after trying to flag down a waitress for some time!) and if you want an itemised bill, you will have to ask, as they only read out the total to you. Definitely go for the food, just make sure you get everything you ordered!
